Why won't my car start?
It can happen without warning, you turn the key and nothing. The car is dead, but why? There are numerous issues that can prevent a car from starting, but some are much more common than others. The following are some of the most frequent problems that result in a no start situation.
Failed Ignition Switch
The ignition switch creates the initial electrical pathway that gets your vehicle running. If the switch goes bad due to corrosion or otherwise you will either experience nothing when you turn the key or a slow cranking engine due to a decrease in electrical flow.
Faulty Starter Motor
The starter motor spins the engine to create the compression needed to ignite the air fuel/fuel mix that gets the pistons pumping. If this part fails you will likely experience a loud click or repetitive clicking sound when you turn the key.
The alternator generates electricity when the engine is running, and stores it in the battery. The alternator also powers most electrical components of the car when the motor is on. If it begins to fail you'll probably experience dim headlights or other electrical problems inside your car.
Broken Fuel Pump
If the fuel pump fails no gasoline will be able to get gas to the engine. This will result in the motor cranking repeatedly but not firing up.
A battery can die for many reasons, such as leaving lights or other accessories on when the engine is not running for too long. A battery that dies this way can usually be jump started to restore its health, but sometimes batteries do need to be replaced. A dead battery will mean nothing will happen when the key is turned in the ignition.
Other problems that could result in a vehicle not starting include:
- Dirty fuel filter
- Clogged air filter
- Faulty fuel injectors or failed injector unit
- Vacuum leaks
- Out of gas
