4 Common Reasons the Check Engine Light Comes On
For many vehicle owners the check engine light all too often conjures up fear of big repair bills and labor intensive service to their ride. Fortunately, this generally isn't the case. The check engine light can turn on for a variety of reasons, but most require relatively simple repairs. There are a few that indicate bigger needs, but these issues usually won't be the case as long as your get to the shop soon after the light comes on. Here are four common reasons the check engine light will illuminate, starting with one of the bigger problems that can occur if you wait too long.
Failed Catalytic Converter
The catalytic converter converts dangerous exhaust fumes into less harmful emissions that are directed out the tailpipe. If a problem arises with this part the check engine light will illuminate and unfortunately this is one of the most expensive repairs you may ever need conduct on a vehicle. However, catalytic converter failure can generally be attributed to some other part, such as the oxygen sensor, that failed first. This would have triggered the check engine light initially. This is why it is very important to get to the auto shop as soon as the light comes on.
Failed Ignition Coil
The ignition creates the electrical pathway necessary to get your vehicle's engine going. If sensors detect that the pathway is not allowing the right amount of current to flow then the light will be illuminated.
Malfunctioning Mass Air Flow Sensor
The mass air flow (MAF) sensor detects incoming air and calculates how much needs to be mixed with the gas in order to make sure your car's engine runs properly. If it is unable to do so because it has become dirty or otherwise malfunctions, the check engine light will come one. This is important to have repaired because a bad MAF sensor can drop your MPGs by as much as 25%!
Cracked Gas Cap
When the check engine light comes on the best case scenario is a loose gas cap. If gas fumes evaporate out of the filler hose because of a loose or broken gas cap the light will come on. Always be sure to tighten the cap after filling up to prevent the need for unnecessary diagnostic work.
